In 1896, South Carolina State University was founded with the mission to provide students in-state with a quality education at an affordable cost. Our history of excellence has carried over into the next century, as we currently serve over 2,600 students from all across the country and all over the globe.
We offer a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs and certificates that can lead you toward a successful career in your desired field. What You'll Learn

As a Bulldog, you will have the opportunity to choose from 17 different subject areas, comprising some 60 different majors. You'll also have the opportunity to participate in programs that are exclusive to SC State, like:
  • The only Bachelor of Science program in nuclear engineering in SC and at an HBCU.
  • Master of Science degree in transportation and the only Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in agribusiness.
  • The only Doctor of Education degree in the state with a concentration in educational administration.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in physics with a concentration in Medical Physics.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Cybersecurity.
You'll learn from highly-experienced instructors who often have years of field experience under their belts, and in programs that are nationally accredited. Currently, SC State holds a top 10 ranking for most enrolled ROTC cadets (No. 1 HBCU), and No. 1 ranking in social mobility for three years (2006, 2007, 2009) from Washington Monthly. SC State was also identified by Forbes Magazine as the exclusive HBCU for research in the state of South Carolina.

Where You'll Study

On the SC State campus, you will discover exceptional facilities that house a number of helpful resources for academics—such as the career center, the Miller F. Whittaker Library, the PUSH Writing Center, and more. A few of these facilities include:
  • Engineering and Computer Science Complex with innovative classrooms, research centers, laboratories, offices, and more.
  • James E. Clyburn Center for conducting research and training workers in the transportation industry.
  • The state-of-the-art Leroy Davis Sr. Science and Research Complex (an extension of Hodge Hall).
  • The only undergraduate science field station in the nation.

With a history of demonstrated excellence, SC State has over 30,000 alumni, many of whom have made strides in areas like athletics, engineering, medicine, the arts, and more. From leadership positions in local and national government, to leadership positions in the U.S. army, our alumni exemplify exactly what it means to be a Bulldog. More recently, SC State has been recognized by familiar faces like U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, who spoke at the 2022 Freshman Convocation. Our alumni include:

  • Gen. Clifford Stanley, '69, who was appointed as Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness
