Terrance S. Smith has built a distinguished career in law enforcement through leadership
in public safety, criminal investigations, and crisis response. As a Special Agent
with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he currently serves on the Deputy Director
Protective Detail at FBI Headquarters, where he leads operational planning, supervises
personnel, develops training programs, and coordinates rapid response efforts in dynamic
environments. Throughout his FBI service, he has held assignments with the Joint Terrorism
Task Force, Violent Crimes Task Force, and Violent Crimes Against Children program,
investigating complex cases, coordinating multi-agency operations, and supporting
critical incident response.
Before joining the FBI, Smith served with the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office, advancing from Deputy Sheriff and K-9 handler to Lieutenant. Across his law enforcement career, he has coordinated undercover operations, trained personnel in advanced investigative techniques, led crisis response efforts, and strengthened collaboration among local, state, federal, and private-sector partners. His experience also includes participation in the FBI's Police Executive Fellowship Program, where he supported information sharing, crime analysis, and professional development initiatives for law enforcement agencies nationwide.
Committed to strengthening his leadership and professional expertise, Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from South Carolina State University before completing a Master of Arts in Management and Leadership from Webster University. He continues to serve his profession through advanced tactical and leadership training while supporting community initiatives, including food drives, highway cleanups, Toys for Tots, and the National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Walk.
