Transforming Student Success
Dr. Tawanna Sanders is an accomplished educational leader dedicated to creating supportive learning environments where every student has the opportunity to succeed. As Principal of RISE Academy, she leads a district alternative education program serving students in grades 6–12, providing instructional leadership, overseeing school operations, implementing restorative practices, and collaborating with families, district leaders, and community partners to improve academic achievement, student engagement, and successful transitions back to traditional school settings.
Throughout her career, Dr. Sanders has advanced from school counselor to assistant principal and principal, serving students across elementary, middle, high school, and alternative education settings. Her leadership has included strengthening school improvement initiatives, supervising instructional staff, coordinating state assessments, expanding college and career readiness opportunities, implementing social-emotional learning initiatives, and leading multidisciplinary teams that address students' academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs. She has also worked to foster positive school cultures by building strong partnerships with families, educators, and community organizations. In recognition of her impact, she was named Rollings Middle School of the Arts School Counselor of the Year in 2022.
Her pursuit of educational excellence reflects a lifelong commitment to serving students and strengthening schools. Dr. Sanders earned a Bachelor of Science in Family & Consumer Sciences, a Master of Education in Counselor Education, an Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from South Carolina State University. She continues to champion innovative educational practices that empower students, support educators, and create pathways for student success.
